I installed seven Mac website blockers and compared setup, browser support, blocking controls, privacy, and price. The choice depends on what you do when a site is blocked. If you switch browsers or reach for your phone, your blocker needs to cover that too.

## Quick picks

[FocusMe](https://getblocker.app/blog/best-mac-website-blockers#focusme)

**I build Blocker.** You are reading this on its website, so I have a financial interest in one of these apps. I have not ranked them or named an overall winner. There are no affiliate links. Each product links to its own website.

## Mac website blockers: quick comparison

Here is what each app does and what it costs. I checked prices from France on October 15, 2026. They may differ in your region or during a sale. To compare only apps you pay for once, read [Mac website and app blockers with no subscription](https://getblocker.app/blog/mac-website-blocker-no-subscription) .

| Opal | Screen-time coaching and routines | Websites and apps | macOS, iPhone | $99.99/yr or $9.99/wk in my test |
| Blocker | Quick setup on one Mac | Both | macOS | $39 launch price; $59 list, once |
| FocusMe | Detailed rules and time limits | Both; 100+ options | macOS, Windows, Linux, Android | €14.95/mo or €119.40/yr; €400 lifetime |
| 1Focus | Low-cost website and app blocking | Both | macOS | Free; Pro €1.99/mo or €9.99/yr |
| SelfControl | A free, irreversible timer | Websites and internet services | macOS | Free and open source |

## Setup and browser checks

On the same Mac, I prepared a timed website block in each app, checked browser support, added a Mac app where supported, and inspected exit controls. Times exclude installation and onboarding. I did not start irreversible SelfControl or 1Focus blocks, grant new system permissions such as FocusMe's Accessibility access, or install its browser add-ons. These checks do not establish how hard each lock is to bypass.

A supported browser is one listed in both the installed app and the developer's documentation at the time of the test. That does not mean I verified every block in use. See Freedom's [Firefox limitation](https://support.freedom.to/en/articles/4582083-supported-browsers-for-website-exceptions-and-non-proxy-mode-on-mac) , Opal's [supported-browser list](https://help.opalapp.com/article/how-do-i-use-the-mac-app) , and 1Focus's [supported browsers](https://onefocusapp.com/supported-browsers/) .

## Cold Turkey Blocker for detailed desktop rules

Cold Turkey lets you combine exact URLs, wildcards, and exceptions with weekly schedules. Its [lock options](https://getcoldturkey.com/features/) include passwords, typed text, delays, and restart protection. I would pick it for detailed desktop rules, though the weekly schedule grid takes time to learn.

Cold Turkey 4.9, July 29, 2026. The integration check flagged a Safari issue on my Mac.

The free version handles basic website blocks. Pro cost €39 once in my test and adds app blocking, schedules, breaks, and allowances. It runs on Mac and Windows, so you will need something else for your phone.

## Freedom for blocking across devices

If blocking YouTube on your laptop sends you to your phone, Freedom is worth a look. One session covers several devices. You choose lists and schedules in its web dashboard while the Mac companion runs the block. Locked Mode can stop you quitting or changing an active session.

Freedom 2.24.5, July 29, 2026. Session setup happens in the web dashboard.

You need an account and cloud sync. My test showed a $39.99 annual plan, plus monthly and lifetime options. I would have a harder time justifying the subscription for a few sites on one Mac. Check the Firefox exceptions in the browser table before subscribing.

## Opal for screen-time coaching

Opal combines blocking with daily usage reports and suggested routines. Schedules were easy to create, and categories save you building lists by hand. The Mac version does less than the iPhone app and did not block Firefox in my test.

Opal 1.5.7, July 29, 2026. Active blocks, limits, and suggested routines.

It needs an account and must keep running. Check its [supported browsers](https://help.opalapp.com/article/how-do-i-use-the-mac-app) before paying. My test showed $99.99 annually or $9.99 weekly. That is expensive if you only want Reddit closed from nine to noon.

## Blocker for quick setup on one Mac

Blocker had a website and app block ready in under a minute. You can start immediately or set a weekly schedule. Strict mode adds steps before changes. Hardcore keeps the block active until the timer ends, with one weekly emergency pass. It works across browsers without extensions, offline, and without an account.

Blocker 1.0, July 29, 2026. An active schedule with break controls and local statistics.

It requires macOS 14 or later and has no Windows or mobile version, wildcards, allowances, or command-line controls. Its track record is shorter than the other paid apps here. After a seven-day trial, it costs $39 once at launch, with a $59 list price and no permanent free tier.

## FocusMe for time allowances and enforced breaks

FocusMe offers time allowances, launch limits, and enforced breaks. Enforced Mode can prevent changes, early exits, and uninstalling. Setup took four to six minutes across several screens. That is more configuration than I would want for a daily focus timer.

FocusMe 7.8.4.1, July 29, 2026. Blocking, time-limit, and Pomodoro templates.

On Mac it needs Accessibility access and browser add-ons or broader blocking when it cannot read a URL. Local plans work without an account, while the optional Coach needs a login and anonymous activity data. My checkout showed €14.95 monthly, €119.40 annually, or €400 lifetime. Use the 14-day trial to check your sites and apps.

## 1Focus for low-cost Mac blocking

1Focus has been in development since 2014. Its free tier blocks sites and apps without an account, with sessions up to six hours. The Websites, Apps, and Schedule tabs are clear, though the small controls and gray tables look dated. Pro adds longer sessions, schedules, pauses, and keyword rules.

1Focus 3.5.4, July 29, 2026. The website tab lists supported browsers and excludes Firefox.

Firefox is unsupported. You can block it as an app, but cannot pick individual sites within it. 1Focus says it does not upload usage data or track visits. In the French App Store, Pro cost €1.99 monthly or €9.99 annually with a 14-day trial.

## SelfControl for free timed website blocks

SelfControl is free and open source. Add sites, set a timer, and start. Restarting your Mac or deleting the app will not end the block. You get no recurring schedules, app blocking, or emergency exit. For keeping a few sites closed for two hours, that is enough.

SelfControl 4.0.2, July 29, 2026. I inspected the timer without starting an irreversible block.

Version [4.0.2](https://selfcontrolapp.com/releasenotes.html) supports one minute to 24 hours. Allowlist mode blocks everything except your chosen domains and can cut off email, SSH, and other internet access. Start with a short block to check what you lose.

## What about Apple Screen Time?

macOS includes Screen Time for daily app and website limits, usage reports, and parental limits through Family Sharing. Try it first for a daily allowance. If you keep dismissing the limits, a dedicated blocker offers schedules and locks that are harder to end early.

## Before you pay for a Mac website blocker

Run a short session with your usual sites and apps. Check every browser you use. Try the exit controls on a block you can afford to wait out, then use the app for a workday before paying.

## Mac website blocker FAQ

### Do Mac website blockers work in every browser?

No. Opal and 1Focus do not block websites in Firefox. Freedom has Firefox limitations with Non-Proxy mode and website exceptions. Check the browser table above, then try your usual sites during a short session before paying.

### Is there a free website blocker for Mac?

Yes. SelfControl is free and open source. Cold Turkey and 1Focus have free tiers, and macOS includes Screen Time. The 1Focus free tier also blocks Mac apps, while Cold Turkey requires Pro for that.
